Plain-English advice

We explain your options so you can make the decision that suits you.

Follow-up care

We call you afterwards to check how you're going.

Why are wisdom teeth taken out?

Often the jaw isn't big enough for wisdom teeth to come through fully and in a useful position for chewing. Sometimes a wisdom tooth comes through only partially, which lets bacteria in around the tooth and can cause infection, with pain, swelling, jaw stiffness and feeling unwell. Wisdom teeth can also be poorly aligned and damage the neighbouring teeth.

Do I need to be asleep?

Depending on the position of your teeth, the complexity of your case and your medical history, your surgeon will advise whether the extraction is best done under local anaesthetic in the chair, or under a general anaesthetic (asleep) in hospital, and will talk through what you'd prefer.

What about costs?

For hospital treatment, you will receive separate fees from the surgeon, the hospital and the anaesthetist. We'll explain our surgical fees at your consultation. Please check with the hospital and the anaesthetist about their fees, and check your health fund cover before you book.

What can I expect afterwards?

Your gums and jaw may be sore and there may be some bleeding for a few days. We'll advise you about the specific care to take after the extraction and how to manage pain. Recovery varies, and your surgeon will give you an idea of how much time off work or school to expect.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks, such as pain, swelling, bleeding, infection and, rarely, nerve injury causing numbness. Your surgeon will explain the risks for your case before you decide. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
