General anaesthetic

We offer treatment in the dental chair or under general anaesthetic in hospital, so you can be asleep for the procedure.

Everyone is different, and people want their teeth removed differently. Depending on your treatment, your health and your preference, we offer:

  • Local anaesthetic in the dental chair at our Ourimbah rooms. You are awake, and the area is completely numbed.
  • General anaesthetic in hospital, so you are asleep for the procedure and wake up when it's done.

Where hospital treatment happens

Hospital treatment under general anaesthetic is at Brisbane Waters Private Hospital or Gosford Private Hospital.

  • Dr Stefanie Calladine operates at Brisbane Waters Private Hospital and Gosford Private Hospital.
  • Dr Lorna Craggs and Dr Hyesuk Choi have visiting rights at Brisbane Waters Private Hospital.
  • Dr Pankaj Taneja operates at Brisbane Waters Private Hospital.

Which is right for me?

Your surgeon will advise based on the position of your teeth, the complexity of your case and your medical history, and will talk through what you'd prefer. A tooth that has fully come through the gum can often be removed comfortably in the chair, while deeply impacted teeth, several teeth at once, or a strong preference to be asleep may suit hospital treatment.

Costs and health funds

For hospital treatment, you will receive separate fees from the surgeon, the hospital and the anaesthetist. We'll explain our surgical fees at your consultation. Please check with the hospital and the anaesthetist about their fees, and check your health fund cover before you book.

Before and after a general anaesthetic

  • You'll receive fasting and medication instructions before your hospital admission.
  • You'll need a responsible adult to take you home and stay with you afterwards.
  • Don't drive, operate machinery or sign legal documents for 24 hours after a general anaesthetic.
  • We'll contact you after your procedure to check how you're going.
A general anaesthetic carries its own risks, which your anaesthetist will discuss with you before your procedure.
